Tinubu to Chinese investors : Your investments are safe in Nigeria
18 mai, par UnknownPresident Bola Tinubu has assured Chinese investors that their investments are safe in Nigeria.
Tinubu also said his administration will always provide needed support to ensure businesses thrive.
The president spoke on Friday when he received a delegation led by Dai Hegen, chairman of the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), in Abuja.
This was contained in a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president on media and publicity.
He said his administration welcomes the opportunity to expand business collaboration with the company as well as upgrade critical infrastructure and facilities for the mutual benefit of both parties.
“I have listened to you carefully. Your operation is consistent with our objectives. We are reforming the economy and taking crucial actions to ensure accelerated growth,” Tinubu said.
“The CRCC, with its subsidiary, CCECC, is a leading company and one of the best partners to work with. I am happy that you are partnering Nigeria in so many areas, particularly in rail construction.
“We will do everything required to ensure that the rail link between the Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan railway and the Federal Capital Territory is completed. We must connect the hinterland with our coastal seaports.
“I am proud of what I started as governor of Lagos state with the Lekki Free Trade Zone. It is now a flourishing environment. It is important to give you the assurance that we will do well to strengthen our partnership and relations.”
He commended the corporation, particularly its subsidiary, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), headquartered in Beijing, for its efforts in delivering value on infrastructural projects in the country.
‘SOLID MINERALS DEVELOPMENT NEXT FRONTIER FOR COLLABORATION’
Tinubu urged the corporation to also explore other avenues of cooperation, especially in solid minerals.
“The door is open for partnership, and partnership that will add value to both sides. Solid minerals development is the next frontier for mutually beneficial growth and collaboration,” he said.
“We need each other. The sustainable path to success is a two-way street. We assure you that your investment is safe in our country. Once you succeed here, I know your reputation in other countries will be further strengthened.”
In his remarks, CRCC’s chairman highlighted some of the projects in the works and those completed by the corporation.
“In the railway construction sector, the Kano-Kaduna railway is 39 percent completed and is on course for completion in the second quarter of 2026,” Hegen said.
“The Abuja-Kaduna railway and Lagos-Ibadan railway have carried approximately nine million passengers since they were completed and commissioned.
“Freight services have officially commenced along Lagos-Ibadan axis since September 2023, and a total 180,000 tons of cargo have been transported.”
Hegen added that the corporation has signed investment cooperation agreements with 119 companies, stimulating investments of $3 billion, and creating 4,000 direct jobs for Nigerians, as well as paying $125 million in taxes.
He said there are plans to increase investments in key areas, such as agriculture, power, solid minerals, natural gas, and renewable energy technologies to promote the economic development of the country.
Hegen extended the invitation of the Chinese government to the president to attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to further deepen cooperation along mutual areas of interest.

It’s illegal for security agencies to arrest journalists for cyberstalking -Falana
18 mai, par UnknownFemi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says it is illegal for security agencies to arrest journalists for cyberstalking.
In a statement on Friday, Falana said section 24 of the Cybercrime Act 2015 which had criminalised ‘cyberstalking’, ‘insult’, ‘causing annoyance’, ‘sending offensive messages’, ‘criminal intimidation’, ‘insult’, and ‘causing annoyance’, had been repealed.
The national assembly had amended the law, with President Bola Tinubu signing the amendment bill into law in February.
The human rights lawyer said the law was amended after suits were instituted against the federal government.
“In line with both judgments of the ECOWAS court, the government of Nigeria has repealed section 24 by removing the provisions relating to ‘cyberstalking’, ‘insult’, ‘causing annoyance’, ‘sending offensive messages’, and ‘criminal intimidation’ from the cybercrimes act 2015 and replaced same with section 5 of the cybercrime amendment act which provides as follows;
“‘Any person who knowingly or intentionally sends a message or other matter by means of computer systems or network that is – (a) Pornographic: or…
“(b) He knows to be false, for the purpose of causing a breakdown of law and order, posting a threat to life or causing such a message to be sent commits an offence under this Act and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not more than N7,000,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of not more than 3 years or to both such fine and imprisonment’.
“From the foregoing, it is crystal clear that the Police and other security agencies lack the power to arrest, detain and prosecute Nigerian citizens for the so-called offences of ‘cyberstalking’, ‘insult’, ‘causing annoyance’, ‘sending offensive messages’, and ‘criminal intimidation’.
“Consequently, all pending cases filed on the basis of the repealed aspects of section 24 of the cybercrime act 2015 should be discontinued without any further delay.”
Last week, Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), regained his freedom after spending nine days in police custody for allegedly violating the Cybercrime Act.

UK impressed with Tinubu’s security strategy – British High Commissioner Montgomery
18 mai, par UnknownThe British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has said the United Kingdom is impressed by the security strategies President Tinubu has put in place over the last one year.
According to him, the United Kingdom has also observed transparency and accountability in governance in the Tinubu administration, while restating the support of the UK for the Nigerian government in this direction.
The UK Envoy spoke on Friday during a High-level Dialogue on Delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda on the theme, “Nigeria’s Global Ambitions: From Hope to Reality,” in Abuja.
“I’d like to use this opportunity to express the whole lot of support of my government to the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu. We commend his agenda for its focus on priorities and delivery. We acknowledge that you have done a lot to put in place transparency and accountability.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event said the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is a transformative policy thrust aimed at repositioning Nigeria as a prime global investment destination.
He said with the agenda hinged on the core pillars of democracy, development, demographics, and diaspora engagement, the present moment serves as the opportune time to remind both Nigerians and the global community that Nigeria stands ready to embrace the future and conduct business.
The VP outlined the administration’s ambitious roadmap, noting President Tinubu’s commitment to bold reforms and strategic partnerships to revive the nation’s economy and enhance security.
He said, “Our reason for this gathering is less about the certainty of our vision for this nation. This has never been in doubt. We are here because of our place in a world of opportunities—a world that can’t afford to neglect or underestimate our place.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is not just a policy framework; it is a statement of commitment, a covenant between us and the people.”
He pointed out that at the heart of the administration’s foreign policy approach, dubbed the ‘Tinubu Doctrine,’ is a ‘4-D Diplomacy Strategy’ centred on promoting democracy, driving economic development, harnessing Nigeria’s demographic potential, and engaging with the diaspora community.
He lauded the vital role of Nigerians in the diaspora, who contributed over $168 billion in remittances between 2015 and 2022, surpassing Overseas Development Assistance.
“This is further evidenced by the recently announced $10 billion Diaspora Fund—a multi-sectoral investment initiative set to be launched soon and expected to strengthen ties with our diaspora community while boosting forex inflows to support our national development plans,” the Vice President said.
Shettima also highlighted President Tinubu’s interventions on the economy, including a ₦75 billion investment initiative to revolutionize the manufacturing sector and the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund to facilitate effective infrastructure development across key economic sectors.
On security challenges, VP Shettima affirmed the administration’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety of lives and properties through regional and national interventions.
He went on extend an invitation to international partners, emphasizing the need for collaboration in the post-COVID-19 era, saying, “This is the time to partner for democracy, for development, for peace, and for security.”
